Never in history have humans been exposed to so many different chemicals so often in such large amounts. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine estimates that the average human is exposed to 90,000 or more chemicals.

It is true that not all chemicals are harmful and that everything found in nature is made up of chemicals. We evolved alongside the chemicals found in nature and our body can handle occasional exposures to them. However, nowadays we are exposed to chemicals our bodies do not know how to handle in amounts that our body cannot detoxify from. In this context these chemicals become toxins. Repeat chemical exposures can build up in our bodies and cause many negative health effects.

Furthermore, exposure to toxins overstimulate our immune system leading to systemic inflammation and many other adverse health effects. Therefore, it is important to support the body to help it remove these toxins.

When it comes to oncology many conventional therapies, such as chemotherapies, remain in our bodies for extended periods of time after treatment. It is important to remove these from our bodies as they may cause deleterious effects. Therefore, detoxification post treatment is important.

At naturopathic specialists we provide many different therapies to help support your body’s ability natural ability to detoxify.

The use of water as a therapeutic modality stretches back thousands of years. The process of alternating hot and cold has multiple physiological effects on the body (1). The benefits of hydrotherapy include:

  • Increase circulation of the blood and lymph
  • Increase nutrition to cells
  • Increase the removal of drugs and their metabolites
  • Speed healing and recovery
  • Relieve pain Increase white blood cell counts
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Decrease stress by promoting relaxation
  • Improve hormonal function

Hydrotherapy is widely used and gentle therapy. However, there are contraindications to its use. A consultation with one of our doctors is required to determine if hydrotherapy is safe and effective for you.

Body Composition Testing

Obesity increases the risk of developing cancer by 1.6x (1). It does so by increasing inflammation, suppressing the immune system, increasing estrogen levels, causing insulin resistance and more (3). Obesity also leads to the development of more aggressive forms of cancer and increased rates of recurrence (2). Using BMI to gauge body fat percentage is not reliable measure. At NS we use the InBody system to analyze our patients body composition. One of the benefits of body composition testing is it tells us our patients visceral fat levels as well as their percent body fat. Visceral fat is the fat in your abdominal region and around your internal organs. Higher levels of visceral fat is associated with increased rates of cancer (4). Body composition gives us an overview of a patients’ body fat %, their muscle mass, intracellular and extracellular water and inflammation. From our patient’s body composition, we can also determine how many calories they should be consuming. We use these metrics to track our patients before, during and after treatment which in turn helps us individualize treatment plans towards them. If you would like to undergo body composition testing please contact our clinic.

Chelation Therapy

Chelation stems from Greek and means to claw. Chelation therapy involves the injection or consumption of chelating agents which bind to and remove heavy metals, toxins, and other undesirable compounds from the body. Common chelating agents are EDTA and DMPS. Chelation can be used to remove lead, mercury, arsenic and other heavy metals from the body. These substances are carcinogens and the build up of them in the body can lead to inflammation, DNA damage and promote tumor growth (1-2) Therefore, removing them from the body is essential to optimal health. Chelation can be used to help prevent the development of cancer or can be used after cancer therapy to remove certain toxins from the body and prevent recurrence. Usually a short round of chelation is performed in conjunction with blood work to see what toxins are present in your body. Your physician will then determine the type of chelation you need and how long you need it for. Chelation also can strip beneficial minerals from your body and so these must be replenished during treatment. If you wish to see if you are a candidate for chelation therapy contact our clinic today.
